Choosing what to major in when we are in college may be one of the most stressful, weighted decisions we make in our early lives. Why I chose to major in public relations is a question I have been asked quite a few times. And sadly, sometimes I don’t even know how to answer. I have only been admitted into the major for less than a year, but I kind of have had a notion that I wanted to major in public relations since junior year of high school, over five years ago.
So why did I really choose to major in PR? There are many reasons, when I really think about it. Here's a short list for starters:
1. The fast-paced environment that comes with working in the PR world
2. The many different skills that are needed to be successful
3. The variety of jobs that are available in PR
For anyone who has worked in the PR industry or has completed an internship, it is easy to see that the environment is very fast-paced. That makes any and every work day exciting. Nothing raises the blood pressure on a Tuesday than receiving a tight deadline and having to work to complete it. But when the time passes and the work is completed on time, the feeling is great.
Obviously it takes a little longer than being a “fresh college graduate” working in an entry-level PR job to be truly successful, but in order to be successful in any aspect, a PR professional should be equipped with all the many different skills that are needed in the industry. Writing, speaking, promotion, advertisement, brand management, social media. It is ALL important for a company, and makes working in the industry a great place to sharpen these all too important life skills.
When I decided that I wanted to major in public relations, I knew that, post-graduation life, I would (hopefully) be able to find a job and actually be able to use my degree. PR is needed by any and all major companies, so whether you're passionate about music, technology, politics, finance, or sports, there is a company out there that will need your help. I am passionate about sports and have been my whole life, so I am set on being able to pursue my dream and work public relations within the sports industry.
As I enter my senior year of college, I can't help but be excited to finish up my public relations degree and even more excited to see where this degree can take me after graduation. It will be a long and crazy journey, but I am ready.
