Before graduating from college, most people are required to complete their fair share of time spent at an internship. Due to the movies and books, internships are made to look like a chance for the full-timers of the company to have a personal assistant and someone who can fetch them coffee.
I'm here to say, most internships are not like this.
After the process of looking through countless number of internship opportunities and applying to many, landing your dream one is such a relief and SO exciting!
During the summer of 2017, I was one of the lucky ones who was chosen to be an intern for the Seattle Thunderbirds Hockey Club. For those who know me, would know that being an intern with the Thunderbirds is and was a dream. But for those who don't, let me inform you.
I am a big sports fan, but more specifically, the sport of hockey is one of my favorite things in the whole world. I have been a fan of the sport since I was 14 years old, and I've watched many, many, many seasons of Seattle Thunderbirds hockey.
Needless to say, interning with them was a DREAM of mine.
This internship involved public relations and marketing, which was perfect for my degree. During my time, it truly felt like I was a full-time staff member. All of the staff were so welcoming, and were always available to help the interns in any way they could. There was no time for the fetching of coffee or the filing of papers. Instead, I had the chance to create social media posts, write press releases for the website, and draft Q&A interviews. All tasks I completed were truly a way to showcase what I have learned in school.
Everything felt like it was being put to use finally!
At the end of the summer, I was rather disappointed to see my time as an intern come to an end. I made some great memories alongside people I count as friends now, and took away a wealth of real-world knowledge. It was so refreshing to come out on the other end of my summer as an unpaid intern and not have the stories of being the office assistant who shreds papers.
